Benefits

What You Get
That Others Skip

Every watch repair workshop can change a battery. Fewer document the seal condition, pressure-test the case, and share photographs of the movement at each stage.

Six Reasons Owners Come Back

Scope Set in Writing

Cost and scope are confirmed before work starts. Owners are not presented with a bill that has grown during the job — and if something unexpected turns up mid-work, the call happens before it continues.

Pressure-Tested Seals

Seal work on quartz pieces is pressure-tested and the watch runs on a timing machine for 48 hours before it is released. George Town humidity is hard on gaskets; the test reflects that reality.

Photographs on Complication Work

Chronograph and complication restorations include photographs at disassembly, at reassembly, and at final testing. Owners see the movement in each condition — not just the finished piece.

Sample Panel Before Refinishing

Before any polishing compound touches a case or bracelet, owners see the depth of correction on a sample panel and confirm the scope. Refinishing removes material permanently; that decision belongs to the owner.

Trade-Grade Parts Only

Gaskets, crystals, levers, and springs come from supply channels used within the repair trade — not from unverified wholesale sources. Part origins are recorded in the job file.

Clear Condition Notes at Collection

Quartz overhauls come with a short written note on seal condition and any wear worth noting at the next visit. Owners leave knowing the current state of the piece, not just that it has been serviced.

Expertise

Workshop Knowledge Applied to Individual Pieces

Watch repair is not a category of work that improves by handling higher volume. The skills that matter — reading a movement's condition, understanding end-shake, knowing when a crystal is chipped versus merely scratched in a way that can be polished — come from working slowly and carefully on individual pieces, not from running a service production line.

The Escapement Lab team handles quartz electronics, mechanical movement work at complication level, and case surface finishing as three distinct disciplines, each with its own tools and bench procedures. A quartz coil test is not done with the same instruments as end-shake measurement; refinishing is not done in the same space as movement cleaning.

Capability Tray
  • Quartz circuit and coil testing with dedicated instrument
  • Pressure testing to case manufacturer's rating
  • Column-wheel and cam-lever chronograph disassembly
  • Calendar module and moon-phase corrector testing
  • Hand refinishing of brushed and polished surface combinations
  • Sapphire and mineral crystal fitting and replacement
Process Steps
01
Intake and condition record

Piece logged, visible condition noted, programme confirmed with pricing before work begins.

02
Scope-specific bench work

Work carried out within the agreed programme. Any additional finding is communicated before the job continues.

03
Testing and verification

Seal work pressure-tested; movement timed; complication positions function-tested at every corrector.

04
Documentation and handover

Written note or photographic record prepared. Piece returned with full explanation of what was done.

Process

Four Steps, No Gaps

Each job moves through intake, bench work, testing, and handover. The owner is involved at intake and notified of anything unexpected — there is no stage where the workshop makes decisions on the owner's behalf without contact.

Timeline estimates are given at intake. For quartz work, two to four days. Refinishing, seven to ten. Complication restoration, five to nine weeks depending on component availability. These windows are stated honestly, not adjusted to sound faster than they are.

Value

Priced to Cover What the Work Actually Involves

The three programme prices — RM 480 for quartz overhaul and seals, RM 1,950 for refinishing, RM 4,150 for complication restoration — cover parts and labour within the stated scope. They are not entry prices to which additions are appended after the fact.

Refinishing requires agreement on the depth of correction before work starts. Complication work requires a scope discussion at intake. In both cases, the price and the scope are linked and confirmed together.

What Makes the Bench Different

Coastal-Specific Seal Protocol

The 48-hour pressure test and timing run after seal work was developed specifically for Penang's coastal environment. It is not a standard step in most quartz overhaul programmes — here, it is built into the price and the schedule.

Complication Work Without Outsourcing

Column-wheel chronographs, calendar modules, and moon-phase mechanisms are handled in-house. Owners do not wait for a piece to be shipped to a third party — and the photographic record stays within the same workshop that did the work.

Bracelet Sizing at Handover

After refinishing, the bracelet is sized to the owner's wrist at the point of collection. This is included in the RM 1,950 programme — not charged separately as a fitting fee.

Staged Progress on Long Jobs

For complication restorations running five to nine weeks, owners receive photographs at disassembly, reassembly, and final test. The job does not disappear into the workshop for two months and return with only a verbal account of what happened.
